Nubian United Benevolent International Association (NUBIA) is a nonprofit urban development located in Boston Massachusetts. NUBIA was founded in 2008 to reduce the impact of food insecurity in the Boston Metropolitan area and create an environment where families are able to learn how to be self-sufficient. Through sustainable gardening along with educational classes, NUBIA has been able to shape local communities.

Key Components

  • Access to Healthy Food: NUBIA provides fresh and locally sourced food to low income families through farm stands and farmer markets in Boston and Cambridge. We offer two farm stands in Cambridge at convenient locations and at lower prices than in grocery stores. We also deliver food to households in the community.
  • Urban Development: NUBIA is responsible for converting over 8,000 sq feet of unused city plots into functioning gardens which produce a wide variety of vegetables and herbs for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) and Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) recipients.
  • Educational Programs: Solving food insecurity takes more than the production of farming space. At NUBIA we believe that through educating local communities on nutrition, gardening and equity individuals can help reduce the impact of food insecurity around their neighborhoods. Our classes consist of educational farming tours, virtual and in person cooking courses along with educational materials on nutrition and food insecurity in their community.
  • Promotion of Nubian Culture: Nubia is an area of fertile land that rests on the Nile in Northern Sudan. This beautiful area is thought to be home to the oldest civilizations in the world and one of the first places to practice farming. Our founder, being from this area, brings the culture of Nubia into our organization. This is done through simple Organic practices in all of our projects.
